The Year of Volatility: That’s how 2008 will be remembered.
The S&P 500 lost almost half its value over the course of the year, and the TED Spread, a measure of the willingness of banks to lend to one another, hit unprecedented levels amid a breakdown of confidence.
But 2009 should be a better year. Economists and market analysts alike forecast a turn in the second half of the year, and already the Chicago Board Options Exchange Volatility Index, or VIX, a measure of market volatility, is beginning to settle down.
